Hiking around Bayrischzell: from the valley path to the Wendelstein
Anyone arriving at Naturhotel Tannerhof feels the quiet call of the Bavarian foothills at once. The expansive hiking area begins right on the doorstep of our hideaway in the mountains. For a start, a relaxed valley walk through the wide Leitzachtal is ideal: along gentle forest paths and alpine meadows, you stroll comfortably to Geitau and on to the baroque pilgrimage church of Birkenstein. This calm tour covers about nine kilometres and only 137 metres of ascent – an invitation to arrive entirely in your own rhythm.
Guided tours and alpine classics
Under the expert guidance of Vroni Waller and Jonas von Mengershausen, our tours – for instance during the active week Fasting & Hiking – lead to the loveliest corners of the region. Anyone seeking the sporting challenge of alpine heights instead chooses the ascent to the striking Wendelstein. The demanding Wendelstein tour runs about ten kilometres and climbs into rocky heights with a wide panorama.
- Geitau and Birkenstein: a gentle valley hike over easy paths, approx. 9 kilometres with 137 metres of ascent, ideal for the first day.
- Seeberg loop: the popular classic over the Seebergkopf, which we present in detail in our magazine article.
- Wendelstein tour: an alpine mountain hike, approx. 10 kilometres, which calls for sure-footedness and sturdy hiking boots.

After a fulfilling day in the mountains, the Tannerhof becomes a place of recovery. Instead of the loud bustle of conventional sports resorts, healing reduction awaits here: a deep breath of fresh air on the sun deck, a few laps in the clear natural pool, soothing warmth in our historic 1936 sauna hut made of kelo wood, or the healthy evening menu of the Planetary Health Diet within our 3/4 rhythm bring body and mind back to their centre.
Cycling and mountain biking: on two wheels through the scenic Leitzachtal
Anyone starting the day at Naturhotel Tannerhof has the Leitzachtal at their feet as a wide, green playground. The varied summer activities begin right behind our garden gate: from gentle valley paths to steep mountain routes, a paradise for cyclists unfolds here. While leisure cyclists glide easily along the babbling Leitzach, the more ambitious find crisp climbs and near-natural trails on the nearby Sudelfeld. For road cyclists, the region is the gateway to demanding Alpine passes that reward you with wide panoramic views and fast descents.
- The Leitzach cycle path: a relaxed pleasure ride along the river on flat paths through shady woods and across alpine meadows. Difficulty: easy, duration: approx. 2 hours, best season: spring to autumn.
- The Sudelfeld mountain bike loop: demanding climbs and spectacular views over the valley mark out this sporty route. Difficulty: medium to hard, duration: approx. 3 hours, best season: summer and early autumn.
- The Wendelstein circuit: the famous classic for road cyclists runs over a distance of 120 kilometres and around 1,630 metres of ascent across the Samerberg and the Sudelfeld. Difficulty: hard, duration: full day, best season: high summer.
After hours of movement in the saddle, the Tannerhof turns into a restorative hideaway in the mountains. The tired body longs for recovery, which here happens quite organically. A plunge into the cool water of the Felsenbad, our natural pond in the forest on the slope, gently revives the spirits. Afterwards, the historic 1936 sauna hut, made of rustic kelo wood, gives deep, soothing warmth to worked muscles. In this way, sporting activity in the Leitzachtal is harmoniously rounded off by conscious recovery.
Refreshing mountain lakes: swimming, gumpen and SUP at Spitzingsee and Schliersee
When the muscles burn after a demanding tour, the cool depth of the water calls. We value the clarity of the nearby mountain lakes as a natural counterpart to the rugged peaks. The Spitzingsee, lying at 1,084 metres, is a quiet, cold mirror framed by deep-green mountain forests. Here, where the air grows thinner and the silence more tangible, or on the slightly lower Schliersee, stand-up paddling unfolds a meditative effect. The gentle gliding while standing trains balance and calms the mind as the mountain peaks are reflected. Such hours complement the summer activities at Naturhotel Tannerhof in an unshowy way.
The wildness of the gumpen and our own Felsenbad
Anyone seeking the immediate, archaic cold after mountain biking or hiking finds it in the hidden gumpen of the regional wild streams. These deep basins, ground into the rock over millennia by the rushing water, hold crystal-clear meltwater. A short, resolute plunge into these natural pools contracts the vessels, briefly catches the breath and, in the next moment, awakens a deep, pulsing warmth throughout the body. An incomparable feeling of freshness that anchors the mind directly in the here and now.
Back at the Tannerhof, this fine trace of recovery continues. Up on the slope, our BadeHarpfe with the 25 m outdoor natural pool and the panorama sauna nestles into the landscape. After a few calm strokes in the cool water, deep relaxation awaits here, as it does in the historic 1936 sauna hut made of kelo wood. The scent of warm wood and the gentle heat gently dissolve the remaining tension. It is this honest recovery in our Spa & Wellness area that makes the Tannerhof a true hideaway in the mountains, where after movement you may simply be.
Hike and Fly: the fascination of paragliding from the doorstep
A step into the wind, the soft rustle of the cloth and the world below you: the Leitzachtal from a bird's-eye view reveals all its alpine splendour. For paragliding enthusiasts, Naturhotel Tannerhof is the ideal base camp for a true hike-and-fly adventure. The exceptional thermals and versatile launch sites make the region an Eldorado for pilots. Just 550 metres from our house, the historic single-seater chairlift carries you comfortably up to the Sudelfeld. Anyone who prefers the sporting variant combines the ascent directly with a hike to the launch sites, while the striking Wendelstein watches over the scene in the background. Our varied outdoor activities give you the perfect access to these flights.
- Launch mountain Sudelfeld: excellent for evening flights with a gentle glide back to Bayrischzell.
- Vogelsang launch site: a more demanding start that rewards with expansive thermals.
- Wendelstein massif: breathtaking views and high-alpine flying conditions for experienced pilots.
After landing on the lush meadows in the valley, you return home to your hideaway in the mountains. Now the time of recovery in the Tannerhof's spa area begins. Our historic 1936 sauna hut, built entirely of rustic kelo wood, gives deep, soothing warmth to worked muscles. For the perfect culinary boost in the evening, Elias Lang and his kitchen team take care of you. You enjoy the Schlanke Tanne Low Carb, our in-house low-carb cuisine, deliberately vegetable- and protein-forward, regional and largely organic, forming the ideal, healthy close to a fine day.
